At Blue Frog, our wines are rooted in more than just soil—they're rooted in story.
Our Zinfandel grapes are grown on the historic Perley Vineyard, a 13-acre parcel planted in the 1940s and 1950s on Lodi’s west side, in the heart of the Mokelumne River AVA. These head-trained, own-rooted vines, now approaching 80 years old, are a living testament to California’s rich winemaking history.
Beneath the vineyard’s surface lies sandy loam soil, prized for producing Zinfandel grapes of exceptional concentration and balance. Above ground, the gnarled vines continue to thrive thanks to the careful stewardship of generations of farmers—and now, Blue Frog carries that torch forward.
Why Old Vines Matter
Old vines yield fewer grapes, but the fruit they do produce is extraordinary: smaller clusters packed with intense flavor and character. The results are wines that reflect depth, elegance, and a sense of place that can only come with time.
Yet these vineyards are under threat. Each year, more old vine plots are uprooted in favor of younger, higher-yielding plants. Once gone, these vines, and the stories they carry are lost forever.
